Starbucks pioneers in offering their customers the convenience of in-store wireless charging of cellular phones. The service is provided through Power Mat technology and is available in some Starbucks locations in California and UK.

On November 18 the company announced a roll out plan to add wireless charging to their 200 stores in San Francisco Bay Area as a first step of the plan to add this service throughout USA, Europe and Asia.

“The availability of Powermat Spots in Starbucks is transformative for San Francisco Bay residents who no longer have to worry about making it through their day with limited battery power,” said Ran Poliakine, CEO of Powermat Technologies. “They know that the nearest charge is only as far away as the nearest Starbucks.”

I tried this at the Starbucks store in Valley Fair mall in Santa Clara, California this New Year’s Eve. Here is how it works:

1) Plug in the ring compatible with your phone (4 types available)
2) Place the phone on the charging mat with the ring touching the charging area, the phone will display “charging” and the ring light will turn green if the charging is activated.

Caveat: It could be rather difficult for the charging to activate as the ring has to be perfectly aligned with the charging mat.

Tip: Try tilting your phone at the 25 degree angle for the charge to activate

It is the coolest thing!
