Kaiser Flu Shot Campaign

A get a beautiful flyer in the mail from Kaiser today. This is a classic case of half truths that actually mislead the public. The flyer reads “Protect yourself from flu”, “Vaccination is the best protection.”.. this is at “no cost” to you. All of which are not true. The rest of the flyer is true but phrased the way that supports the previous questionable “opinions”.

Let’s break it down point by point and make some CORRECTIONS:

1. “The flu is serious. Even healthy adults and children can be hospitalized by it.”
CORRECTION: Flu can be serious and the flu virus mutates every year. That’s why it is nearly impossible to predict which version of the virus occurs each year, before vaccine is developed and approved by FDA each year (ahead of time!!). Natural immunity develops after the person gets sick with it. Catching it early and taking proper care of oneself is the most important part of preventing the flu from spreading! (Rest, rest and rest, fluids and rest again).

2. “Vaccination is the best protection.”
CORRECTION: Flu vaccine manufacturer insert states the opposite. The insert for FLUVIRIN, the most popular flu vaccine on U.S. market today, says the following:

“Specific levels of hemagglutination inhibition (HI) antibody titers post vaccination with inactivated influenza virus vaccine have not been correlated with protection from influenza illness.”

It says that every year, because it is the truth, the factual truth. And the manufacturer knows it.

The problem is, not very many people read this insert. It comes in the box from the manufacturer, but most people only see their vaccine already in the syringe in the doctor’s hands. Many doctors don’t see or read it either and even pharmacists are not always sure it exists. When I requested the manufacturer insert at Walgreens, the pharmacist had to go ask another pharmacist to confirm its existence and then ask again if she is allowed to give it to me. The answer is yes and I got it. I invite you to do the same! Just say “I would like a manufacturer insert for this vaccine, please”. Take it home and read it. I’m including some photos of one below.

3. “Everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot.”
CORRECTION: Says who? The person who didn’t read the side effects on the insert?? Let’s list them again.

Side Effects [insert, page 2]:

* Body as a whole: Local injection site reactions (including pain, pain limiting limb movement, redness, swelling, warmth, ecchymosis, induration), hot flashes/flushes; chills; fever, malaise; shivering; fatigue; asthenia; facial edema.

* Immune system disorders: Hypersensitivity reactions (including throat and/or mouth edema). In rare cases, hypersensitivity reactions have lad to anaphylactic shock and death

* Cardiovascular disorders: Vasculitis (in rare cases with transient renal involvement), syncope shortly after vaccination.

* Digestive disorders: Diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; abdominal pain.

* Blood and lymphatic disorders: Local lymphadenopathy; transient thrombocytopenia.

* Metabolic and nutritional disorders: Loss of appetite.

* Musculoskeletal: Arhralgia; myalgia; myasthenia.

* Nervous system disorders: Headache; dizziness; neuralgia; paraesthesia; confusion; febrile convulsions; Guillain-Barre Syndrome; myelitis (including encephalomyelitis and transverse myelitis); neuropathy (including neuritis); paralysis (including Bell’s Palsy).

* Respiratory disorders: Dyspnea; chest pain; cough; pharyngitis [inflammation of the throat]; rhinitis [running nose].

Let me summarize the most dangerous side effects in one line in digestible terms: death, paralysis, face and organ swelling, joint pain and infection, immune and lymph system disorders, allergies.

4.“You need to get the flu shot every year for it to work.”
CORRECTION: Yes, this is true, it says on the insert that your immunity actually weakens and repetitions of injections will be necessary to maintain it. If this sounds good, go ahead!

5. “The vaccine is available at no cost to Kaiser Permanente members.”
CORRECTION: Yes, sure, it is already included in your over the top monthly premiums! Add on the overpriced services of your health cost (see side effects).

Photos below are from the FLUVIRIN insert approved by FDA for the year 2009-2010. I checked it for the recent years. Pretty much same insert.
