SF Bay View: City Goats move into Junk Yard [videos]

April 20, 2010

San Francisco Rail Road junk yard in Bay View has become a home to a heard of goats, who from time to time go on weed removal assignments, all green and organic solution to poison oak and other unwanted weeds.  “Poison oak is actually good for goats,” says David Simon in the interview with SF Gate in December.

The project started two years ago when David Gavrich, the CEO of Waste Solutions, rescued 14 goats from Petaluma doomed for the death row. Now with 32 goats City Grazing business is up and running.

“Rent-a-goat” says the citigrazing.com website advertising natural and sustainable weed removal option for fire prompt hills, parks and other near the water areas where pesticides are especially undesired.

Historically, goats were the second domesticated animal after the dog. The City Goat Farmers treat their goats like family and train them to respond to voice commands.

Now their home is being remodeled into a shelter build out of rail road junk and shipping containers. Masha Slavnova, an architect and an artist, designed the shelter.

This Sunday April 18th, the Goat naming ceremony took place where invited guests came to name the goats. We named them with coffee and ice cream names, probably because it was very hot.

I love it. What a great and natural way to control unsightly weeds. We need more of this outside the box thinking to solve other issues like the current health insurance reform debate in Washington.

I really like such life on a farm, when you are extremely close to nature. Unfortunately, I live in a megalopolis and don't often have an opportunity to have a rest in a countryside, though I like it very much. My grandparents live in the suburbs of a big city. Sometimes I visit them, mainly in summer. I adore to play with baby goats . It's an unbelievable feeling. I'm waiting for summer)))))))

This is great! I'm an entrepreneur myself, and I like the idea of adding lawn-mowing goats to my pool supplies business. As soon as it warms up here in Indiana, I'll be as busy as a one-armed wallpaper hanger. :)

This is a smart blog. I mean it. You have so much knowledge about this issue, and so much passion. You also know how to make people rally behind it, obviously from the responses. Youve got a design here thats not too flashy, but makes a statement as big as what youre saying. Great job, indeed.

Nearly anyone who has experience raising goats will tell you that a shelter is very important. Perhaps even more important than fencing. And in my travels and talks with other goat people. Thanks.
