New Cell Phones Push Legal Radiation Limit

Can't wait to get the latest cell phone gadget on the market? Don't be so quick, check its radiation emission numbers first. The Environmental Working Group, a non-profit organization designed to use the power of public information to protect public health and environment, just released their data on cell phones radiation.

Among the highest scoring radiation offenders are Motorola’s Droid, Blackberry Bold 9700, LG Chocolate Touch and HTC Nexus One by Google with the radiation emission numbers reaching 1.5 Watt per kilogram, pushing the legal emission limit of 1.6 W/kg set by FCC.

Apple's iPhone holds the middle ground with the radiation emission numbers going up when worn on the body vs. held to an ear.

Radiation emission numbers vary by phone, manufacturer and the mode the phone is in. For example, some phones have higher radiation when in the text message mode, some when worn on the body, some when held to an ear. Check our phone in the EWG database today.

“But 2010's offerings aren't all bad news”, says EWG. “Three new phones — Motorola Brute i680, Samsung Mythic, and Pantech Impact — rank among the lowest-emission devices on the market.”

Some studies suggest that cell phone radiation may increase the risk of brain and salivary gland cancer. While more studies are being done to confirm or disprove this theory, EWG recommends people buy cell phones with low emission numbers.

EWG also offers a list of tips on reducing radiation exposure. Among them are the following:

1. Text vs. speak

2. Keep the cell phone away from soft tissues of your body

3. Less reception bars, stay off the phone

4. Keep cell phones away from children
