I suppose that there are many things you could do or not do on Friday the 13th of February 2009, but greeting Egyptian DJs Aly and Fila in San Francisco with their first USA performance at 1015 was on my “to do” list and, as I found out later, for a good reason.
Around midnight, at the very birth of the V-Day 2009, crystal clear vocals synchronize with the lights, sound vibrations spread through the room, it resonates with shimmering glow, then suddenly, burst of icy fog dawns on the dance floor, filling up the space with thick milky air. It's freezing, but the room is so hot from the heat of dancing people, it leaves only tiny layer of ice on your skin. Only music, only you, only dancing, nothing else exists in that moment. That is the state of trance. And Aly and Fila play some seriously good trance.
Visiting United States for the first time, this Egyptian DJ duo from Cairo are up and rising in the world of electronic music. Influenced by DJ Tiesto and Armin Van Buren, they bring progressive trance back to the table, something rare even in San Francisco's club scene. Actually, San Francisco has been lucky that way, but try to find trance in Las Vegas.
Someone once told me “when you dance, everything is better. All the other stuff disappears”. This is the kind of music I can dance all night to. Cleansing, uplifting, wonderful.
