With as many as 500,000 jobs lost only last month, the job hunting situation is becoming pretty ridiculous. A small room at San Mateo Marriott hotel full of booths and desperate faces looking for each other, forming long lines, handing papers… So who's hiring?
US Army, San Francisco Police Department, US Borders Control, Stanford Sheriff Department, California Public Utilities Commission, Citi Bank and a tone of staffing agencies.
Even though the job fair was advertised as Administrative/Office, I did not see any administrative positions offered. The closest one was a teller position at Citi Bank, which recently received the bailout money.
Local TV station crew from Channel 5 eyewitness news positioned the camera beside the long line to the staffing agency booth and interviewed people one by one without having to move at all. The line did the moving part.
People at the line were confused about standing in it since, as some of them rightfully noticed, they have already singed with the temp agencies or could easily do it online.
I went to a job fair like this one a year ago in Milpitas, and I swear, it looked just like this one. I even saw the same positions like Engineer for the California Public Utilities. Have they not filled that one in over a year or has it become available again?
I couldn't help but wonder, do job fairs still work?

I have to admit that the San Mateo job fair video made me queasy. There's an awful lot of need out there. I wouldn't want to be one of those desperate faces looking for hope, forming long lines, and handing over resumes.
